Analyse 20 linguistic devices in the BNC to show how speech and writing influence each other, converging toward a shared, more informal style.
Characterising multilingual practices in Gibraltar
How bilingual speakers in Gibraltar combine English and Spanish to create "Llanito". Using sociolinguistic interviews collected by Weston (2012), we reanalysed code-switching within and between (7,700+) clauses to confirm earlier self-reported claims.
Colloquialisation in spoken British English
We explore whether passive and relative clauses show that colloquialisation (that is, the spread of conversational features into writing) is also visible in 21st century speech using the BNC1994 and the BNC2014.
